The Pontian Monument

There were several events that took place in continuing with the vision of 1963 to build a monument. This was to remember the many sacrifices made by our people between 1916 and 1923 and to remember the 350,000 victims that lost their lives and the survivors that were forced to flee.

In 1994 with Mr. Nikos Kotsaboikidis as President and the support of the Executive Committee at the time, Mr. Steve Xanthopoulos acted a representative of the Brotherhood Pontion and approached the then Mayor of East York Mr. Michael Prue at a dance. The idea was proposed to build a monument. Mr. Prue had been an active supporter of the Brotherhood Pontion and guided Mr. Xanthopoulos and the Brotherhood Pontion through this process. The process was a long one with many members assisting with the fundraising, planning and building of the Pontian Monument.

Mr. Xanthopoulos played a pivotal role as he represented the Association in numerous East York Council Meetings.  The approval was made at the June 2nd 1997 East York Council meeting to place a  memorial Monument for the Hellenes on the grounds of East York Civic Centre. The recommendations of the Administration and Operations Committee included: (1) the location of the monument (2) the wording of the monument (3) the establishment of a trust fund for ongoing maintenance of the monument.

August 18, 1997 Mr. Michael Prue wrote to the Borough Clerk to advise them of a proposal brought forward in the Council meeting on August 11 1997. Various branches’ of The Royal Canadian legion also attended this meeting. He also mentioned a meeting that took place on Thursday August 14, 2013 which was attended by  Mr. Steve Xanthopoulos on behalf of the Brotherhood to explain our request.

Arts East York  proposed the first location that could be used for the monument, facing Durant Avenue, however members of the Legion did not agree, as they did not want to give precedent to any group no matter how well intentioned. Mr. Xanthopoulos let it be known that he would seek permission from Council to place the Memorial in another Borough.  It was conveyed that this memorandum would be forwarded to Council in September 1997 .

July 28, 1997 the Brotherhood’s lawyers Loopstra, Nixon and McLesish sent diagrams and proposals to City Council regarding the transfer of land from The Toronto Public Library Board to the Pontion Brotherhood Toronto.

June 22, 1998 Toronto Public Library held a meeting with Mr. Prue in attendance. The motion was put forward as follows:

1-The Board approved that the ownership of the parkland adjacent to the S. Walter Stewart Branch be ceded to the City of Toronto

2- The staff was directed to make arrangements to transfer the property with the solicitor of the City of Toronto

November 12, 1998 the president at the time Efstathios Mihailidis wrote to Mr. Michael Prue to let him know that effective November 8, 1998 the Pontion Brotherhood Toronto unanimously voted to proceed with the monument and the representative, Mr. Steve Xanthopoulos,  to oversee the completion of the monument.

In 1999 Mr. Michael Prue, MPP, met with Mr. Dimitris Sidiropoulos  advising him that the Brotherhood need to decide to move ahead with the construction of the Monument or they would lose will lose the opportunity. The cost of the monument was estimated to be about  $40,000 - $45,000.

A General Assembly was held with the outcome of the approval of the members of the Association to move ahead with the building of the monument with the following conditions:

1-            No mortgage was to be taken out for the cost of the Monument.

2-            Build it at no cost to the Brotherhood

3-            Finish it in 1 year

The president at the time Dimitris Sidiropoulos was concerned about the costs and funding of the monument. The Committee members suggested dances, fundraisers and even for the Committee members to loan money which would be slowly paid back to the members. The committee raised approximately $10 000 in loans from its members.  There were several other associations that held fundraiser dances that donated approximately $125000 to The Brotherhood for the purchase of the monument.

The Cypriot Community Center allowed the Brotherhood to use their Community Center at no cost to use their community Center at no cost for the Brotherhood to host a dance for the purpose of raising funds for the monument. This even raised over $6000. There were several other similar events held and all the funds that were loaned to the Brotherhood were paid back in full.

The permit for building the monument was obtained by Steve Xanthoplouos. The transfer deed was registered at the Toronto Registry Division on December 24, 1998 at 12:04 pm as instrument # CA579423.  On January 5, 1999 the Brotherhood’s law form Loopstra, Nixon and McLesish submitted the Transfer of land documents to the City of Toronto. There were several sketches that had been submitted for the design of the monument however the final design was made by Maria Misailidis.

The official unveiling of the monument was made on May 19th, 2000 with many community members present. It was an important day for not only the Brotherhood Pontion but for all Hellenic Pontians around the world. Every year, on May 19th, the Brotherhood Pontion organizes a memorial service at the site of the monument to pay remember and to honour the memory of the hundreds of thousands of victims of the Pontian Genocide.

  Το Μνημείο των Ποντίων

Υπήρχαν πολλά γεγονότα που έλαβαν χώρα στη συνέχιση με το όραμα του 1963 για την κατασκευή ενός μνημείου. Αυτό ήταν για να θυμηθούμε τις πολλές θυσίες του λαού μας, μεταξύ 1916 και 1923 και να θυμηθούμε τα 353.000 θύματα που έχασαν τη ζωή τους και τους επιζώντες που αναγκάστηκαν να τραπούν σε φυγή.

Το 1994 με τον κ. Νίκο Koτσαμποϊκίδη ως Πρόεδρο και την υποστήριξη της Εκτελεστικής Επιτροπής, ο κ. Steve Ξανθόπουλος ενήργησε ως εκπρόσωπος της Αδελφότητας Ποντίων και πλησίασε τον τότε Δήμαρχο κ. East York Michael Prue σε ένα χορό. Η ιδέα προτάθηκε για να χτιστεί ένα μνημείο. Ο κ. Πρου ήταν ενεργός υποστηρικτής της Αδελφότητας Ποντίων και καθοδηγείται ο κ. Ξανθόπουλος από την η Αδελφότητα Ποντίων για αυτή τη διαδικασία.

Η διαδικασία ήταν μεγάλη με πολλά μέλη να βοηθούν με τη συγκέντρωση χρημάτων, το σχεδιασμό και την κατασκευή του Μνημείου των Ποντίων.

Ο κ. Ξανθόπουλος έπαιξε καθοριστικό ρόλο, όπως ο ίδιος εκπροσώπησε την Ένωση σε πολλές συνεδριάσεις στα συμβούλια του East York. Η έγκριση έγινε κατά τη συνεδρίαση του Συμβουλίου East York στις 2 Ιουνίου 1997. Η τοποθέτηση ενός Μνημείου ως μνημόσυνο για τους Έλληνες στο East York Civic Centre. Οι συστάσεις της Επιτροπής Διοίκησης και Λειτουργίας περιλαμβάνουν: ( 1 ) τη θέση του μνημείου ( 2 ) τη λεκτική διατύπωση του μνημείου ( 3 ) η δημιουργία ενός ταμείου για τη συνεχή συντήρηση του μνημείου.

18 του Αυγούστου, 1997 ο κ. Μιχάλης Πρου έγραψε στον κ. Borough ενημερώνοντάς τους σχετικά με την πρόταση ώστε να επισπευσθεί στη συνεδρίαση του Συμβουλίου στις 11 Αυγούστου 1997. Ανέφερε, επίσης, μια συνάντηση που πραγματοποιήθηκε την Πέμπτη 14 Αυγ 2003 στην οποία συμμετείχαν ο κ. Steve Ξανθόπουλος , εξ ονόματος της Αδελφότητας για να εξηγήσει το αίτημά μας .

28 Ιούλη 1997 , οι δικηγόροι της Αδελφότητας Loopstra , Νίξον και McLesish έστειλαν διαγράμματα και προτάσεις στο Δημοτικό Συμβούλιο σχετικά με τη μεταβίβαση της γης από το Toronto Public Library συμβούλιο στην Αδελφότητα Ποντίων Τορόντο.

22 Ιουν, 1998 Toronto Public Library πραγματοποιήθηκε μια συνάντηση με τον κ. Πρου παρόντες . Η πρόταση διατυπώθηκε ως εξής :

1 - Το Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο ενέκρινε ότι η κυριότητα του πάρκου δίπλα στο Υποκατάστημα S. Walter Stewart να παραχωρηθεί στο Δήμο του Τορόντο

2 - Το προσωπικό κατευθύνθηκε να προβεί σε ρυθμίσεις για να μεταβιβάσει την κυριότητα με το δικηγόρο της πόλης του Τορόντο

12 Νοεμβρίου, 1998 ο τότε πρόεδρος της Ευστάθιος Μιχαηλίδης έγραψε με τον κ. Μιχαήλ Πρου να τον αφήσει να γνωρίζουν ότι η Αδελφότητα Ποντίων Τορόντο ψήφισε ομόφωνα να προχωρήσει με το μνημείο και τον εκπρόσωπο , κ. Steve Ξανθόπουλος, για να επιβλέπει την ολοκλήρωση του μνημείου .

Το 1999 ο κ. Μιχάλης Πρου, MPP , συναντήθηκε με τον κ. Δημήτρη Σιδηρόπουλο συμβουλεύοντάς τον ότι η Αδελφότητα πρέπει να αποφασίσει να προχωρήσει με την κατασκευή του Μνημείου ή θα χαθεί η ευκαιρία. Το κόστος του μνημείου εκτιμάται ότι θα είναι περίπου 40,000 - $ 45,000.

Η Γενική Συνέλευση πραγματοποιήθηκε με την έκβαση της έγκρισης των μελών του Συλλόγου να προχωρήσει με την κατασκευή του μνημείου με τους ακόλουθους όρους :

1 - Δεν θα μπει υποθήκη για το κόστος του Μνημείου .

2 - Φτιάξτε το μνημείο χωρίς κανένα κόστος για την Αδελφότητα.

3 - Τελειώστε σε 1 χρόνο

Ο τότε πρόεδρος Δημήτρης Σιδηρόπουλος ήταν ανήσυχος για το κόστος και τη χρηματοδότηση του μνημείου. Τα μέλη της επιτροπής πρότειναν χορούς , έρανους και ακόμη και για τα μέλη της Επιτροπής τα χρήματα του δανείου που θα καταβληθεί σιγά-σιγά πίσω στα μέλη. Η επιτροπή έθεσε περίπου 10,000 δολάρια σε δάνεια από τα μέλη του. Υπήρχαν πολλές άλλες ενώσεις που βοήθησαν στον έρανο.

Η Κυπριακή Κοινότητα επιτρέπει στην Αδελφότητα να χρησιμοποιοεί το Community Center τους χωρίς κόστος για τη χρήση της κοινότητάς τους κέντρο χωρίς κανένα κόστος για την Αδελφότητα να φιλοξενήσει ένα χορό με σκοπό την άντληση κεφαλαίων για το μνημείο. Αυτό συγκέντρωσε πάνω από 6.000 δολάρια . Υπήρχαν πολλές άλλες παρόμοιες εκδηλώσεις και όλα τα κεφάλαια που δανείζονται στην Αδελφότητα είχαν επιστραφεί στο ακέραιο.

Η άδεια για την κατασκευή του μνημείου ελήφθη από τον Steve Xanthopοulos. Η πράξη μεταβίβασης πρωτοκολλήθηκε στη Γραμματεία του Τορόντο στις 24 Δεκεμβρίου 1998 στο 24:04 ως μέσο # CA579423 . Στις 5 Ιανουαρίου του 1999 συνιστούν στην Αδελφότητας δικηγορική παρέμβαση με τους Loopstra , Νίξον και McLesish οι οποίοι υπέβαλαν τη μεταβίβαση εγγράφως της γης από την πόλη του Τορόντο. Υπήρχαν πολλά σκίτσα που είχαν υποβληθεί για το σχεδιασμό του μνημείου , ωστόσο το τελικό σχέδιο έγινε από τη Μαρία Μισαηλίδη .

Η επίσημη παρουσίαση του μνημείου έγινε στις 19 του Μάη του 2000 με πολλά σημερινά μέλη της κοινότητας . Ήταν μια σημαντική ημέρα, όχι μόνο για την Αδελφότητα Ποντίων, αλλά για όλα τα Ελληνικά Ομογενειακά Σωματεία Ποντίων σε όλο τον κόσμο.

Κάθε χρόνο στις 19 Μαΐου, η Αδελφότητα Ποντίων διοργανώνει επιμνημόσυνη δέηση στο χώρο του μνημείου για να θυμόμαστε και να τιμούμε τη μνήμη των εκατοντάδων χιλιάδων θυμάτων της Γενοκτονίας των Ποντίων.
